While many marketers will tell you to use Google keyword tool, this is not really the best advice to follow when it comes to doing keyword research for SEO purposes. The Google keyword tool is in the AdWords section for a reason, because it is intended for AdWord users.
Others will tell you to go use a free version of Market Samurai because they think it is the best keyword research tool. There are several problems when it comes to using software such as this. For one the software uses "free" online databases such as Google which is no different than using Google itself. Another problem is that if the service is down your software does not work or worse if Google makes changes the software reports incorrect data.
The only way to get real proper keyword research done these days is by using a program that has a auto updated database which is paid for and maintained. Your first option here would be SEO Book which is very expensive to have a premium account. Your second option is to use the MD Keyword Researcher Tool inside Marketers Domination members area.
The Keyword Researcher uses a paid for database that is updated and uses several sources for it's data. The MD Keyword Researcher allows you to do niche research, competition research, as well as keyword research. So you are taking care of several areas of your marketing all at the same time using one tool.
What Is Keyword Research
In simple to understand terms it is finding popular words that people use in order to search for what they are wanting. For example you may go to Google, Bing, or even Yahoo and search for how to build a blog. You will them be shown the results of what you are looking for. The words "how to build a blog" that you used in the search engine box is a keyword phrase.
So if you had a business that built blogs for others then "how to build a blog" obviously would be a keyword you want to use when promoting your business. This is what keyword research is basically all about.
How To Do Keyword Research
Below I will explain several ways to do keyword research using MD Keyword Researcher. I am covering the keyword researcher because this is the best keyword research tool to use for your SEO. As stated above you could use SEO Book but it is a very expensive option that does not cover any competition research.
The MD Keyword Researcher is just one tool out of many that you have access to when you are a Marketers Domination member. You should consider joining and get access to some seriously powerful marketing tools. Act Now! Join Marketers Domination.
- Competition Research
Starting up the keyword researcher is as simple as a click, once open you will be presented with form that looks like a search box. In this search box you will want to enter your competitions website domain name (ie: mydomain.com) including the http but not the www.
Once you have this entered then you will click on Start Keyword Researcher button at the bottom. The keyword tool will then start to gather the data to display for you. This process could take several minutes so please be patient and wait for it to stop.
When the data appears you will see website url's and links for keywords. The website url's are the sites where your competition has obtained backlinks and the places you should try and get back-links from also. The keyword links that show will take you to a keyword research page showing what keywords that website url uses for it's back-links.
By clicking on the keyword links for each website url you will be able to tell what each site uses for its back links. So not only will you be able to get your competition keywords, you will also be able to get the keywords of the sites where your competition has back-links from.
On the top of the keyword researcher you will see a tab that says "Summary", clicking on this will give your competition back-links count as well as keyword research. Clicking on the keyword links on the summary will give you the keywords your competition uses for backlinks.
The purpose here is for you to get back links on the same sites as your competition (assuming they are on quality sites and not spammy blogs). This will also allow you to obtain keywords that you can start targeting to build back links to your websites.
- Keyword Research
Keyword research is really not as complex as many make it out to be. You do not have to worry about how many results are in Google or do any search in quotes. These methods I have never agreed with because the fact is it waste your time. Google keyword Tool does have some uses (not for marketing keyword research) but I am not going to get into that on this article.
To get to the keyword section on keyword research you need to enter a domain name in the search box as shown above in the competition research section. Once you have allowed the system to load the data for the domain name then you want to go to the summary.
On the summary page you will see 2 links for keywords, one being US and the other being UK. Select the preferred one and click on the link. A new page will open up with keywords for that domain name you added in the search box.
You will notice several columns on the keyword page, these columns are explained in detail on the legend. Click on the legend to understand what each column is for, study the legend and then close it.
Let's say you searched for the domain ezinearticles * com (no link juice credit), what you will see is a keyword page that list the keywords, avg. volume, and other columns. For this example you only need to pay attention to the avg. volume.
The avg. volume does not mean that particular keyword gets X amount of searches a month. It means the keyword + related keywords get that amount of volume. This is one huge mistake many make when they see volume as they think it is only that keyword that gets that amount of searches.
You want to find keywords that have a decent volume and ignore the amount of results because they mean nothing. Once you find the keywords that interest you then you want to follow through with the related words research below.
- Related Words Research
While you are still on the keyword page (the one for ezine articles) looking at the keyword column you will notice the keyword "cell phone lookup". Take this keyword and put it into the keyphrase search box on top of the page and click on search.
This will pull up another keyword page in a new window. On this page what you will see is keywords related to cell phone lookup. You have a legend on this page also but the only columns you need to be concerned with are keywords, avg. volume, and competition.
The competition column is not hugely important and can be ignored. Under the keywords column you will see the keyphrase "reverse cell phone lookup" and if you look under the avg. volume you will notice about 5 other keyphrases have the same volume.
The reason for this is because "reverse cell phone lookup" is a related keyphrase to "cell phone lookup" as well as the other 5 keyphrases are. The volume on these are the same because it is the avg. volume of all the keyphrases related to cell phone lookup combined.
For example each one of those keyword phrases says it has a volume of 49,500. This means on average each one of those related keyword phrases actually get about 10,000 searches a month. This is an average and not exact as no keyword tool can tell you the exact searches, not even google's keyword tool.
Knowing this information now it is time to determine what keywords you want to go after. Study the keyword pages and do some searches on your own for keywords you want to target. Once you have your keywords then it is time to start writing content with those keywords and related words in the content.
You can then start building backlinks using the keywords and related keywords. Remember if you want to rank for cell phone lookup then you need to have backlinks for all the related keywords. Having backlinks for the related keywords will make going after the main keyword a great deal easier.
