In Poker, the hardest obstacle to overcome is the dreaded bad beat. Players have lost tournaments, cash games and even small fortunes over a bad beat. In fact, the worst type of bad beat is the online poker bad beat. Why? Because it seems to occur more frequently online than it does in live poker.

Now I am not going to promise you that I can help you never get a poker bad beat, however, I can promise you that I can teach you how to minimize your losses, avoid many of the scenarios that create a bad beat and even show you how to recover and overcome the after-effects of a suckout or bad beat in poker.

Once you begin to understand how to better evaluate your game and overcome the bad beats in poker you will soon have the strength to beat poker and improve your game. Face it, the cards are not going to magically change and all of a sudden you will never get a bad beat. But, knowing how to better prepare yourself, you will begin to see how bad beats become a less important factor in your game and how overcoming the tilt or anger associated with a bad beat will improve your game dramatically.

Bad Beat Poker Stories

Every poker player has his own bad beat poker story to tell, however, the first step in overcoming the bad beats in poker is to stop telling the stories! We all get them, everyone is aware of them, now is the time to conquer the negativity surrounding bad beats in the game. Not every card is going to come on the river, and not every top pair is going to hold up, understand this crucial fact and you will begin to comprehend the variance in poker. For example, pocket aces will win about 85% of the time in a heads up situation, however, that percentage is reduced as more players go to the flop. In the case of pocket aces against 4 players you have a slightly better chance than 65% to win the hand on the flop.

Even worse, if you go to the river, you may only have a 35% chance to win the hand. This is why it is so crucial to understand that although most bad beats occur on the river, you want to play the hand with the hope of avoiding the river. Now in some cases, this is impossible, as players will tend to see additional cards to complete their drawing poker hand. If you truly want to avoid the bad beat poker situations you have been getting into, then you need to increase your aggression by the turn.

One of my favorite sayings in poker is "All the money is made on the turn". The reason is that players are more apt to fold on the flop and turn then they are to fold preflop, especially when they have a lucrative holding such as KQ suited or 10 J suited. Those hands want to see the flop and usually this creates the biggest poker bad beat scenario. Drawing hands are always dangerous to your made poker hands. If you want to beat poker and stop losing, then you want to become more aggressive by the turn. Doing so will reduce the number of bad beat stories you will tell.

Poker Bad Beats
So far we have learned that in order to win at poker and reduce the bad beats, you want to first accept the fact that bad beats will occur and that you must overcome the emotions of losing. Secondly become a little more aggressive with your made hands by the turn to eliminate potential draws. The final strategy in beating poker and minimizing bad beats is to consider the choice of folding when you could possibly lose the hand. It is far better to fold a hand even when you are ahead then to risk losing the tournament to a suckout. Players that get this concept are winning players!

Entering a hand with a weak hole card or a drawing hand usually results in a loss of chips either by missing your draw or by having to fold when your draw is strong. Therefore, folding a poker hand pre-flop that has less potential to complete a hand on the flop is usually a good idea. I realize that 2 suited cards preflop are attractive, however, consider that the percentage of making a flush by the river when you are holding suited hole cards is only 18%. Not a good percentage to call a raise or to enter a pot out of position.

The reality is that poker bad beats usually occur when a player does not select a good starting hand or when a strong starting hand is played improperly according to basic strategy. There are many ways to choose your starting hands that tend to hold up more often. Following basic poker rules and understanding your percentages is the first step. After you have an elementary knowledge of starting hands and percentages, your next step is to understand the way online poker software utilizes the percentages in dealing out bad beats.

The hard part is putting our plans to action. I believe that the most common reason for that is because most people seek instant gratification. Many of us need to see results or rewards for our efforts quickly; otherwise we tend to lose interest. There are other reasons too of course, such as the three listed by Vic Johnson in his book titled "52 Mondays". Johnson says three common reasons people don't get started is: 1) They don't know how or where to start, 2) they think the work will be too difficult, or 3) they simply believe that they cannot do it.Here's the good news. There are things that you can do to overcome these obstacles and get motivated. For the instant gratification seeker, Johnson recommends getting yourself a 12 month paper calendar. The reason it should be paper is so you can hang it somewhere in plain sight. Then you will need to schedule a reasonable deadline in which you believe your goal(s) can be and should be achieved. Next, you will need to break the goal down into monthly or even weekly bench marks. For example, let's say your goal is to lose 100 pounds and you have allotted yourself a year for the accomplishment. You can break that goal into 52 weeks, which would then give you a bench mark goal of 2 pounds per week. If you meet your weekly goal, you should reward yourself with something small that you can enjoy. Brian Tracy, in his book "The Psychology of Achievement", gives a good example of short term rewarding. Let's say yours sitting at your desk staring at a blank screen or the telephone. You either need to write a letter or make some phone calls. In this situation you would buy yourself a good cup of coffee. For every line your write, or phone call you make, you'd allow yourself a sip of it. Small things like this do actually work because your subconscious mind begins to attach positive consequences for your efforts. In the long run, self-motivation will come naturally.Now let's move on to the next obstacle: You don't know how or where to start. Johnson says that the first phase of any goal should be "the research phase". Find a mentor, a forum, a group, or any form of local or online community that centers on the one thing you are trying to achieve. The best thing you can do is find someone who has already succeeded. You can study that person and discover what they had to go through and how they did it. Once you've done your research then you can move on to the second phase which is to map out a plan of action. I'll go over action planning in a different article.This brings us to the last two obstacles: "I can't do it" or "the workis too hard". This stems from a bad habit of negative thinking. It is our thoughts that generate feelings, and our feelings that generate actions, so ultimately it's our thought process that needs alteration. We can alter our thought process by telling ourselves that we are capable and that we can achieve anything we set our minds to. This is not an easy process, as we are creatures of habit and habits are hard to break! But Aristotle says we are what do on a repeated basis. So, just change what you tell yourself repeatedly and eventually everything else will follow. To help with this process, I highly suggest listening to positive affirmations twice a day- once in the morning before starting your day, and once again in the evening before you fall asleep. I am going to leave a link and the end of this article to a "positive affirmations" audio. Eventually, as good habits began replacing the old ones, you can cut down the affirmation sessions to just once in morning.Well there you have it! No more excuses! Just remember, the hardest part is to get the ball in motion. If you give yourself a hard enough push in the beginning, then you will get enough momentum to keep it rolling. In Carnegie's book, "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" he tells us that if there is a circumstance that worries us we should do 3 things: First, ask ourselves "what is the worst that can possibly happen?". Then prepare ourselves to accept it. Lastly, he says we should proceed to improve on the worst case scenario.Worry can cause many negative symptoms such as fatigue. Why waste valuable time and mental energy on something that may or may not occur? Instead, we can chose to take that energy and use it productively on brainstorming one of two things: 1) Possible solutions to the problem or 2)What lessons to take and learn from the experience.Here is another huge treatment for worry: Faith. I have honestly noticed a huge difference within my social circle between those people who have faith in God and those who do not. People of faith are more joyful, they smile more, and they seem to age slower. I believe that much of this has to do with the fact that people of faith turn their worries over to God and trust that He will work things out in their best interest. It is definitely less strenuous to feel taken care of, as though someone higher is in control, versus feeling like your on your own. Have you ever noticed that when you write your thoughts out, it allows you to organize your ideas? You are then able to make sense of all the brain scatter and regain a sense of clarity. Also it makes our thoughts and ideas become real, concrete tangible things. This is what we want our goals to become. There are different ways to do this. You can do the obvious, pen and paper. Or, you can create a mind-map, also known as brain storming. This can also be done on paper or you may download programs or apps that allow you to do this from a PC, an iPad, or an iPhone. You can check out MindNode, iThoughts, or Freemind to name a few.

Step 2: Assign time framesThe second step is to assign a time frame to each goal. Whether it's a month, six months, a year whatever the case. This is another step in making your goals concrete. The time frames should not be related to your priorities. A priority list will only give you an idea of where you be investing most of your time and resources. The time frames will depend on the nature of the goals and the number of steps involved in achieving them. The time frame you give yourself should be reasonable. Not so far out that you put off work, but not so close that your left with stress and anxiety. If you're not sure how much time the goal will take, find people who have gone what you are trying to achieve. If you don't know anyone in your personal social circle, look on line for forums and bloggers.
Step 3: The law of attractionThe law of attraction states, that like attracts like. Meaning, you attract to your life whatever it is that you think about each day. For instance, if you constantly stress over financial problems and worry about debt, than you will continue to draw those negative circumstances to your life. However, if you focus on the positive aspects of your life and visualize an abundant future than you'll draw positive experiences and circumstances to your life like a magnet. This law works whether you want it to your not, and whether you believe in it or not. I can tell you from personal experience that the law of attraction is very real. If this is something you have never heard of before, I highly encourage you to watch the DVD titled "The Secret" or read the book.
Step 4- Be an optimistThis step ties into the law of attraction. Again, if your outlook on life is positive, you will continue to attract positive things. You will be surprised on the people, situations, and things you will draw into your life simply by having a positive outlook. It is impossible to control every unexpected circumstance that may arise but we can control the way we chose to react to things. There is a quote by Charles Swindoll that I would like to share with you:
The longer I live,the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church...a home.The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.~Charles SwindollStep 5: Pray, meditate and visualizeMeditation brings clarity and focus. It is during this mental state when I am able to create a plan and achieve my goals. Also when we pray we are sending a personal and direct request to God for whatever it is that we are seeking. At the same time, we are sending a clear signal to the universe of what we want to manifest. This is because when we pray, we are thinking and visualizing of the thing that we are asking for. If we ask for what we want and have faith that it is coming, then our thoughts will generate emotions of excitement and anticipation. It's these emotion that our thoughts generate that ultimately put of the vibrations or energy needed to attract our dreams and hearts desires.
Step 6: Design a vision boardPlease do not underestimate this step. Get yourself a large poster board and began attaching pictures, signs, flyers, vacation brochures, whatever images relate to your list of goals. Put the board somewhere that you will see every day. Look at the images, visualize yourself in them. Get excited in knowing that the images you see will be yours in good time. Just to give you an example of what I mean, let me share what I have added to my own vision board. One of my goals is to take a 14 day cruise to Alaska with my family.So I requested a brochure from a popular cruise line, I cut out the front cover and attached it to my board. Another goal is to one day buy a beautiful spacious country home, where my family and I will have acres and acres of land. I found the perfect picture to match my desire on pinterest.com. I printed the image and attached it to my board. I also attached a picture of money, a spacious office, and well you get the point. Again, this is all for the purpose of generating the right energy and vibrational frequency.Step 7: Create a plan Before I began to write out my plan, I like to breakdown each goal down using bullet points. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Say my first goal is to manifest abundance in my life. Well I have to really think about what abundance means to me in terms of what I want to achieve. And in doing this, I have to be specific. This step is not only going to help us create a plan, but in the visualization process as well. Okay so here is what my break down would look like:

Break Down: Goal #1: Abundance
Financial freedom- $100,000 annual income, debt Free. Quality of life- Time spent with loved ones, vacations and cruises. My hearts desires- Spacious five bedroom country home, BMWPlan: Goal #2: Lose Weight (50 pounds) Schedule appointment with nutritionist Began a 1200 calorie per day diet Exercise 2 hours per day, 5 days per week Run 1 mile 2 evenings per week Schedule a follow up visit with nutritionistStep 8- Schedule deadlinesThis goes back to the time line topic. If you don't have a deadline set for each aspect of your plan, then it is not concrete and you will be less likely to hold yourself accountable. So get out your datebook or calender and start scheduling those appointments, workouts, or whatever task you have assigned yourself. Again, be realistic about the amount of time you give yourself.

We all know the benefits of being successful in network marketing because this is what is promised in all the business opportunity meetings. They promise that you will have financial freedom and no longer be tied to a clock. So, we have more time to do our hobby and to spend time with family and friends.

There are many companies that tell you you need to join that company and you will be successful. Many of the so-called guru's will say, "Buy my training and I will show you how to be successful." With all these claims it can be very confusing if you are trying to figure out exactly how to be successful in network marketing.

The Myths About How To Be Successful In Network Marketing
The following is what I am calling myths because they do not guarantee you success in Network Marketing. These do help, but they are not absolutely needed to make money in a MLM.

Many will say join my company and you will be successful. They may point to how great the product is or how great the compensation plan is. However, just take a look at company's income disclosure (they must have one according to the law) and you will notice that some are making a lot of money, but the majority of the people in the company are making nothing, and most are losing money. So joining the "right" company will not make you a successful networker.

A similar myth is spread by some gurus, that is getting the right training. However, truth be told very few of these gurus know how to market. Most make a product and rely on affiliates to actually market the product. There are some great products, but many of them are based in theory as the guy or gal teaching it may have little or no experience in marketing. They basically take information and repackage it into some type of product.

The other side of these myth is the promise of finding the perfect marketing strategy will catapult you to be successful. The numerous marketing strategies and product launches every week is staggering. This can create information overload for most. This creates categories that many fall into when they go through these types of trainings.

Some will try out the strategy or put the training in action, and do have success. Others, try it, but run into a problem and stop. Others learn it, but never put it into action. The the last group buys the product, but never go through the training. Most fall into the last three groups, this keeps the guru and training programs with enough customers that will continue to buy product after product.

Many marketers live from product to product launch. Without these launches, they would make little or no money.

A lot of nuggets there and I strayed off topic a little. But, I think we clearly say that knowing how to do something while important, does not mean that you will be successful in MLM.

The next is joining the right team. Very similar the join the right company myth. Very similar to the company myth. Joining a great team and having a great up-line, does not mean that you will succeed.

Some will tell you that you need a mentor. This could be someone in your up-line or a leader that you follow. Again having a great mentor definitely helps, but does not mean that you will be successful.

I know that it may seem that I am being negative when I am writing these myths. It is actually a little fun:-)

Having all the above is great and helps, but notice they are outside of you. There are two things that come from the inside, and if you have them you are guaranteed to be successful in network marketing. Have just 1 and you will not succeed in MLM.

How To Be Successful In Network Marketing
There two things that will ensure that you will be successful in network marketing. The number one thing is desire. Luckily, most have a desire for a better life. It is just natural. You may need to hone that desire to be more focused, but that is not that hard to do.

If you have a clear desire to be successful in network marketing, then the chances of you finding a way to be successful is good. But, you can guarantee your success if you have desire and the success thought process.

What is the success thought process?

This is the willingness to train yourself to think like successful people. There is no course that I know of that can teach you how to think like successful people. But there is two ways you can do this. That is through reading and listening to audios of successful people. This done over time you will start emulate the ideas in the audios and in the writings.

When you start thinking like successful people, you will start doing the action that is required to be successful. Then you are successful.

May be you were hoping for something more complicated, but now you know how to be successful in network marketing. No start reading and listening to audio daily.

The "Baby Boomers" (those born between 1946 and 1964) are beginning to retire; Generation X (born b/w 1965 and 1976) is starting to come up the ranks and fill those open leadership positions; and those from Generation Y, a.k.a. "The Millennials", (born 1977-1998) are either firmly entrenched in the workforce or still in school thinking about how old all the people in the workforce are!

Do you have a business that has a multi-generational workforce and are sometimes just outright puzzled at how to deal with the leadership development issues that come with such a workforce mix?

Young professionals want to be led in a very different way than their elders. If you want to succeed in a Generation Y world, focus on how they want to be led; don't get caught in a generational gap.

In my current place of business, I see and deal with the generational gaps firsthand. Too often the Baby Boomers think the Gen X crowd is lazy and the Gen X crowd thinks the Gen Y folks are entitled "kids."

We have one middle manager that is in his late 40's (Baby Boomer) who often walks around the office floor at 6 p.m. to take inventory of who's still working. What he generally finds is a decent portion of the Gen X crowd still working diligently, while the Gen Y crowd has gone for the night. Does this scenario sound familiar to you, whether it is in your corporate workplace or your own business?

This middle manager is portraying the typical leadership style of a Baby Boomer; who feels that people have to put in long hours and 'pay their dues' to move up the corporate ladder.

However, those of us in the Gen X and Gen Y buckets tend to try and have more of a 'work/life balance.' The boomers often see this as laziness and entitlement, thus the leadership gap when it comes to the current multi-generational workforce we're dealing with.

Great leadership means understanding your peoples' 'needs and wants.' Let's briefly discuss how the generations differ, so you can develop your leadership skills and learn how to approach each generation, no matter which one you're in.

Keep in mind, that these are generalizations about large groups of people, so not everyone is going to fit into their respective 'bucket' perfectly.

Baby Boomers - As I mentioned above, 'Boomers' traditionally believe in the 'paying of dues' approach. Keep chugging along, remain loyal to your company, listen to your elders, put in your hours and eventually you'll be rewarded with your promotions and payday. If you hate your job, that's just part of paying your dues and a normal fact of life. They treasure hard work over everything and feel that you have to "do what you gotta do."

Generation X and Generation Y, on the other hand, often have a completely different way of working and different leadership styles than their Boomer counterparts. The new generational workforce is social and cares more about the pursuit of an interesting, fulfilling, less stressful career than the Boomers. They want flexible hours, continuous training and development, more vacation time, and expect to leverage technology to work more effectively, rather than grind out those long hours just to put in the 'face time' at the office.

A Global CEO survey performed by PriceWaterhouseCoopers showed the Millennials would rather have career development than a bonus by a margin of 3 to 1.

Also, given another opportunity, these Millennials would leave organizations that don't want to help them develop their careers. They don't care so much about the money, they prefer great leadership and executives and colleagues who will teach them the leadership skills necessary to succeed in their preferred fields.

Are you finding that these statements are hitting home based on your current workforce? Can you understand how these generational gaps can cause big issues in the workplace if they are not addressed? One group thinks the other is lazy and not loyal, while the other thinks they are overworked and inefficient.

So, what can you do to ensure the new leadership group will both, mesh with the current aging workforce and want to stay with your company for the long haul?

Here are a few tips:

1. Offer training programs; especially those that develop leadership skills, time management, new technologies in your respective workplace, and how to manage work and family. Gen X and Y love training and learning, and are very focused on work/life balance. This will allow you to entice the younger workforce into staying and also will give the Boomers some perspective on what the younger generation wants.

2. Increase benefits, such as vacation time and company offsites. The new generation 'works to live,' they don't 'live to work.' As such, they have lives outside of work, love to vacation, and generally feel that life is too short to work all the time. Allow an extra week of vacation if you can afford to do so; give them the option of telecommuting periodically throughout the month, and allow them flexible work hours as long as their work is getting done effectively and efficiently.

3. Give the Gen X & Gen Y crowd some autonomy. Leadership that isn't always hovering over your shoulder will go along way with the new generations. Also, they don't want leadership that thinks they run the show, just because they have a higher title. Gen X and Gen Y are very much into the Earned vs. Granted Leadership dichotomy.

There is no doubt in my mind that the newer generations have goals and priorities that seem worlds apart from those that are leaders in current society, but if you want to bridge the generational gap, you are going to have to learn the leadership skills that will allow you to do so effectively.

If you choose to fore-go leadership development, you do so at the peril of your own business. Tony Hsieh's belief is "if we get the culture right, then everything else, including the customer service, will fall into place."

Venture Capitalists will tell you they invest in three things; people, people and people. Yes, that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it'll give you the idea that having the right leadership in place means the difference between success and failure in most companies.

Let's go back and look at how Tony Hsieh used leadership as the foundation for shaping Zappos, a household name now. Zappos is known for doing things in a way in which puts people before profits. Below is a brief timeline of Zappos existence:

1999 - Tony Hsieh invests $0.5 million in an online shoe store 2000 - Zappos gets rejected by numerous investors and runs out of money. Hsieh begins funding operations with his own money and sets his salary at $24 2002 - Hsieh sells his high end condo to continue funding the business, all against the wishes of his family and advisers 2005 - Amazon.com offers to buy Zappos, Hsieh declines the offer. He stated "If we sold, we'd probably be folded into their operations and our brand and culture would be at risk of disappearing" 2009 - Amazon.com agrees to let Zappos remain independent and buys Zappos for $1.2 billion and Hsieh remains the company's CEO (his annual salary remains a whopping $36,000)

Without the passion and leadership of Hsieh, Zappos would have gone bankrupt in 2000; now they are one of the most successful companies in the world. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and another great leader saw the strength of Tony Hsieh's business and properly allowed Hsieh to continue to lead Zappos into the future; showing the foresight of trusting in a brilliant leader.

Let's look at another example. General Electric; even in turbulent times, focused on leadership and has churned out numerous c-level executives over the years (Leadership extraordinaire Jack Welch being their most famous alumni).

Their mission is to inspire, connect and develop the leaders of today and tomorrow. GE spends close to $1 billion per year on training; yes, you read that correctly, $1 billion. They have been an incredible company for decades and they are known for their leadership development. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Simply put, people need leaders and so do businesses. The current environment is a turbulent one, but also extremely exciting in terms of technological advances and the true globalization of the business world. You need to be able to develop leaders that will make a difference in your business and be able to adapt to the ever changing world.

Have you been burned when you thought you finally groomed a leader (or even brought one directly into your business) and had them fail? Leadership identification failure can be costly. An effective leadership development program may not rid you of that potential risk, but it can dramatically reduce it.

Now, you can read all about leadership development and leadership skills till you are blue in the face, but until you actually go out and do something and practice those leadership skills, you will not make all that big of a difference in your follower's lives. SI Games, the developer of Football Manager, takes risks with the game trying to enhance a great game. Most of the time they succeed, but sometimes they do not. In my Football Manager 2013 review I will give my thoughts on Football Manager 2013.


This is more on the normal career mode and not the new classic mode that allows the game to move along quicker and not have to worry about many details of the game.


One thing I always worry about when I hear about the new Football Manager game is if my PC is powerful enough to play it. Years ago I used to play on a very old computer and it took ages for it to process things.


My Fear Of Football Manager 2013

So any Football Manager 2013 review is going to mention the speed of the game. This has been a problem with many of the former versions of this game.


Football Manager 2013 processes really well and quick. However, if you want to run the 3D view of the matches you will need a more up to date computer. However, the older computer can still run the 2D view or just the text part if you want.


The Features I Like In Football Manager 2013

The first feature I noticed was the stream lined look of the game. It looks really slick and it is a joy to click through the screens looking at all the stats, players, and anything else in the game.


Your assistant manager is much more active in Football Manager 2013. He will give you advice on a number of issues including training, media handling, suggestions for new players, player relations, and tactics. Also in the matches he will give you his view of the match. Of course, it is up to you if you choose to accept his advice or dismiss it.


The training is now laid out in on a calender. You can choose what you want to focus on and the intensity of the trainings. There are all the other options to train a player in a specific area and new positions are still there. I found it much easier to navigate and understand than the previous games.


The other feature I used a lot since I play in lower leagues most of the time is the option to sign a player on a rolling contract or game-to-game contract. This makes it easier to bring in a lot of new players without spending a lot of money on contracts.


Of course, the downside is the player can easily leave your club at anytime as other clubs can offer him a contract without paying any compensation to you. You can also cut players very easily and not have to pay any penalty.


I noticed a huge part of the game now is the media. There are many press conferences that you can attend. You can send your assistant if you choose. This do get repetative after some time. However, my personally I like the press conferences.


Thee are also time to have team meetings and meeting with a player. I used these a little and they work very well. I have used it when the team was not playing well and with players not in good form. The next match I won 6-1 on the road.


I am enjoying my current game in Football Manager 2013 playing with Truro City. There is not much I dislike in my Football Manager 2013 review.

We often talk about leadership and the importance of honing your leadership skills here, but part of that is building your brand; either a personal brand or a company brand.

If you intend on building a large following or attracting and leading top talent in the marketplace, you're going to need a solid brand; no question about it.

Think about your past and current business or career. Are you struggling to build your brand and show your niche who you and your business you really are? Have you been wondering why you're not able to convert potential clients or convince your boss that you are deserving of a promotion.

Are you finding it difficult to portray the correct "image" and just get overwhelmed at where to start? Well, you're not alone in wondering where to begin. I've been there just like you, along with many more before and after us!

Take a moment, close your eyes and imagine what it would be like for people to hear your name or company name and associate that with good feelings and feelings of 'I need to buy that' or 'I need to work with them'! What would a strong brand do for your career or business? Would it help you expand your business to new heights?

Now that we've laid that out there, I'm very glad you stopped by because we're going to discuss a couple quick strategies on why you should focus on building your brand and showcasing your leadership skills.

Let's first talk about a brand, what the heck it even is, and why should you care about branding yourself or your business if you're not some giant corporation? You may think a brand is the logo that you have up over your door or on your stationary, but a brand goes much farther than that.

A brand is a powerful tool that can engage your audience, build their trust and create credibility in the marketplace.

BUT, before you think about building your leadership brand, you have to understand what it is that your business stands for.

Once you understand your reason for building your business, you can then begin to brand yourself as a market leader and start gaining the presence you need to succeed.

Think about Apple as a brand. In your opinion, what do they represent; fancy phones, music players and computers with great graphics?

You might think that, but Apple believes that everything they do should challenge the status quo and as a company, they transfer that inspirational leadership and passion to their people and products.

Simon Sinek lays it out beautifully in his speech on How Great Leaders Inspire Action as seen on TED.com (found at 3:20 of the video). Apple is an incredible brand; one we should all learn from.

So, why build up your brand from a leadership perspective? Here are three good reasons to think about (even though there are dozens more):

1. Creates Trust - Let's return to Apple for a moment. They have gone to great lengths to build up customers' trust, so current and potential customers trust that whatever they buy from them will be of top quality. It's why people wait in line for days to get the next generation phone when theirs is working perfectly fine.

Half the time, consumers don't even look at it, they just buy it because it's Apple! Ok, while large corporations seem to have an endless supply of funding, that doesn't mean you can't build up your brand without breaking the bank.

With social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter, you can demonstrate to people the true leadership skills you've ascertained over the years by getting involved in conversations and building relationships (I've actually discussed using Twitter as a branding tool in a previous post). Those trusting relationships are what will drive potential clients or customers to trust your brand and allow you to influence their decision to follow you, not someone else. Those that learn the skills to leverage the influence of their networks will achieve a much greater level of success and will be seen as leaders in their niche; it's that simple.

2. Attracting Your Ideal Client - I won't go too deeply into this one, as I've already discussed your Appropriate Target Market in an earlier post. But, a strong leadership brand will enable you to connect directly to the wants and needs of your preferred client base. By building the appropriate leadership skills and speaking to the clients that will actually want your service, you're going to build your business that much faster.

If you're an employee, you'll get your superiors to see what leadership skills you bring to the organiziation, thus helping you get promoted. A strong branded message will attract that preferred client base and you'll be better off for it.

3. Create "Barriers to Entry" in your niche - As Shakespeare wrote in Romeo and Juliet; "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." That quote speaks to how what matters is what something IS, not what it's called. You are exactly that..."You".

Your competitors can try all they want to duplicate your brand and leadership style, but your strong brand will make that incredibly difficult. You are effectively putting up barriers to entry by building a strong brand because competitors will have to convince potential clients that they should be trusted instead of you.

Powerful branding will make that an uphill battle for the competition if your brand displays who "you" truly are and what you stand for, rather than just a fancy logo. That being said, be sure you emphasize what makes you unique and keep that in all your messaging to your audience. Be consistent and clear in your message and your audience will understand that you are more than just a name or picture.
