Video and Audio Equipment Overlook and Gear Bag Breakdown

Background Info:

I've been recording videos of stuff for over 25 years and mostly stuck to home comsumer video equipment. I would later learn it runs in the family as I've recently been given some footage from my grandfather's home recordings. From Sony Handycameras to big JVC VCR (video casset recorder) styles I've used a bunch of them.

From (2010)-until now, I've been shooting video professionally. That would be I get paid to press record at events, make video stories, docuement history, ect.

While my home gear bag doesn't have a lot in it, the production houses I've worked in has some nice toys.

Sony and Pannasonic HD shoulder mounts running from 10k-20k in retail price. Down to a dozen gopros placed all over for reality style shooting. At the end of the day you get video but some of it just looks a lot better than others.

Always Learning the Craft

While at home I use my peronal gear and keep the camera setup really basic. For the longest time I used a tiny hand held Aiptek 720p camcorder. The image quality was just right for the clips I was shooting. As for audio, I picked up a wireless Azden microphone, the WMS-Pro which is one of their very low end models.

Later on I would pick-up from a local classifieds ad a Canon Vixia HG20 which I've used around the world to shoot all kinds of video. It's a discontuned HD camera that sells on ebay and amazon for just about 200 dollars today, but retailed for around 1200 around 2008.

This camera is a tank, I've dropped it many times, it's been in all kinds of weather and environments and it just keeps shooting. Of course it does use a hard drive so I'm sure it's going to fail soon or at some time.

Audio Kit

For the most part I use the interal microphone of the Canon Vixia when I'm out shooting. It has a really nice stero sound and does well in loud locations. If I want to step it up I'll pop on the rode video microphone to get a dialed in mono audio track.
