Bear with me for a minute as I tell a tale of the Carmen Winstead Story,

An Urban legend started sometime in early 2006, the story portrays Carmen Winstead, a 17-year-old girl supposedly pushed down a sewer and killed by a gang of girls from her school. This legend has circulated around the internet, garnering youtube videos (200,000+views), dozens of yahoo answers, Myspace, dozens of images created, Carmen Winstead on wikipedia, and even Snopes Online.

So what relation does the carmen winstead real story have with Internet Marketing, Business building and Keyword research?

A lot! This simple keyphrase surrounded by an urban legend is a good lesson in how a search engine propagates information to the public and what impact it can have on your business and your websites.

In studying this keyword phrase, there are about 33,000 searches monthly (1000 daily average), yet less than 14,000 results in Google for some of the related keyword phrases.

Now of course the Carmen Winstead Story may not be a keyphrase that will fit into any niche (I know it does not fit in mine) However, this example is something that would work well with a person selling fictional books, urban legends or has a site pertaining to scary or mysterious occurrences. Maybe even a site with adsense or amazon products.

The point is that the keyword research you are doing does NOT necessarily have to focus on the hottest trends of the day to be successful, 'Carmen Winstead Story' is a keyphrase that is largely ignored, yet an enormous amount of people are searching for answers in using that keyphrase, even 6 years after the legend was first started.

The Lesson: keywords and phrases directly related to what you think visitors are searching for, may not be the keyword to bring traffic to your website.

The Challenge: find keywords and phrases that are relevant, yet answer the question of your niche. Looking deeper into your niche, are there any urban legends that might help you find visitors?

I am going to spend a little time researching some 'Urban Legends' in a couple of my niches and see what I can come up with.

They pushed her down a sewer

About 6 years ago in Indiana, Carmen Winstead was pushed down a sewer opening by 5 girls in her school, trying to embarrass her in front of her school during a fire drill. When she didn't submerge the police were called. They went down and brought up 17 year old Carmen Winstead's body, her neck broke hitting the ladder, then side concrete at the bottom. The girls told everyone she fell... They believed them.

FACT: 2 months ago, 16 year old David Gregory read this post and didn't repost it. When he went to take a shower he heard laughter from his shower, he started freaking out and ran to his computer to repost it, He said goodnight to his mom and went to sleep, 5 hours later his mom woke up in the middle of the night cause of a loud noise, David was gone, that morning a few hours later the police found him in the sewer, his neck broke and his face skin peeled off.

If you don't repost this saying 'She was pushed' or 'They pushed her down a sewer' Then Carmen will get you, either from a sewer, the toilet, the shower, or when you go to sleep you'll wake up in the sewer, in the dark, then Carmen Winstead will come and kill you.

Carmen Winstead was a young girl who died when she was pushed down the sewer by five girls she thought were her friends.

Carmen was 17 years old when her parents decided to move to Indiana. Her father had lost his job and the only way he could find new employment was by moving to a new state. The relocation caused a lot of problems for Carmen. She had to leave her friends behind and attend a whole new school in Indiana. Carmen had a hard time making friends when she changed schools. It was the middle of the school year and most of the students had no interest in befriending the new girl. Initially, she spent many days alone, walking from class to class without speaking to anyone, but she eventually started hanging around with a group of five other girls. Carmen thought these girls were her friends, but it wasn’t long before she discovered that they had been talking about her behind her back and spreading vile rumors.

When she confronted them, the girls turned on her and began bullying her every day, making her life a misery. They started out calling her names, but then the bullying got much worse. One day, she left her school books in the classroom at break time. When she returned, she found someone had taken a sharpie and written dirty words all over her books. Another day, she opened her bag and discovered someone had poured yoghurt all over the insides. Sometimes, she would come to school and find her locker had been vandalized. The final straw came when she put on her coat at recess and found that someone had stuffed dog poop in her pockets.

There and then, Carmen Winstead decided that she couldn’t take the bullying any longer. She planned to stay behind, that evening, after school, and tell her teacher what had been happening. Unfortunately, her decision came too late to save her life.

After lunch, her teacher announced that the school was holding a fire drill. When the alarm sounded, Carmen and the other students filed out of the classroom and assembled in the yard outside. As the teachers read out the roll call, the gang of five girls decided that this was a great opportunity to embarrass Carmen in front of the whole school during the fire drill. They moved over to where Carmen was standing, near a sewer drain, and began crowding the poor girl, getting in her face and nudging her towards the open manhole.

They pushed her and she tripped over and fell head-first down the manhole. When they saw her falling, the girls started giggling and when Carmen’s name was called out, they shouted "She’s down in the sewer!"

All of the other students began laughing. But when the teachers looked down the manhole and saw Carmen’s body lying at the bottom in the muck and the poop, the laughter abruptly stopped. Her head was twisted around at an odd angle and her face was covered in blood. Worse still, she wasn’t moving. There was nothing any of the teachers could do for her. Carmen was dead. When the police arrived and went down into the sewer, they determined that she had broken her neck. Her face had been torn off when she hit the ladder on the way down and her neck snapped when she landed on her head on the concrete at the bottom.

The police hauled Carmen’s body out of the sewer and sent her to the mortuary. Everyone had to stay behind after school while the police questioned all of Carmen’s classmates. The five girls lied to the police, saying they had witnessed Carmen falling down the sewer. The police believed the girls and Carmen Winstead’s death was ruled an accident and the case was closed. Everyone thought that was the last they would hear of Carmen Winstead, but they were wrong.

Months later, Carmen’s classmates began receiving strange e-mails on their MySpaces. The e-mails were titled "They Pushed Her" and claimed that Carmen hadn’t really fallen down the sewer, she had been pushed. The e-mails also warned that the guilty people should own up and take responsibility for their crime. If they didn’t there would be horrible consequences. Most people dismissed the e-mails as a hoax, but others were not so sure.

A few days later, one of the girls who pushed Carmen down the sewer was at home taking a shower, when she heard a strange cackling laugh. It seemed to be coming from the drain. The girl started to freak out and ran out of the bathroom. That night, the girl said goodnight to her mom and went to sleep. Five hours later, her mom was awoken in the middle of the night, by a loud noise that resounded throughout the house. She ran into her daughter’s room, only to find it empty. There was no trace of the girl. The worried mother called the police and when they arrived, they conducted a search of the area. Eventually, they discovered the girl’s grisly remains.

Her corpse was lying in the sewer, covered in muck and poop. Her neck was broken and her face missing. It had been completely torn off. One by one, all of the girls who pushed Carmen that day were found dead. They had all been killed in exactly the same way and were all found at exactly the same spot. In the sewer at the bottom of the same uncovered manhole where Carmen had met her doom. But the killing didn’t stop there. More and more of Carmen’s former classmates were found dead. It seemed that anyone who didn’t believe that Carmen had been pushed, was eventually found down in the sewer with their necks broken and their faces torn off.

They say that Carmen’s ghost is still on the rampage, hunting down anyone who doesn’t believe her story. According to the legend, Carmen will get you, whether it’s from a toilet, a shower, a sink or a drain. When you go to sleep, you’ll wake up in the sewer, in complete darkness, paralyzed, unable to move, hearing cackling laughter all around you. Then, as you scream in horror, Carmen will come and tear your face off.

So be careful who you bully, because you just might find yourself on the receiving end of the curse of Carmen Winstead.

Golly .... The Carmen Winstead Story sounds awfully like the script to a movie that was out a few years earlier called The Ring - scariest movie ever! It has taken me nearly 10 years to not have nightmares of the girl climbing out of the well and with one post you bought it all back - cheers Ord ???

(just joking - kind of)

Ummm,

Merry Christmas to you too!

Nightmares for Christmas...gee thanks! Haha! :P

But seriously, I'm with Rach on this one. I too saw the movie The Ring and those pictures from the first post are indeed from the movie.

I'm sure I could find some urban legends around "voice/voices", but I'm not sure I want my voice over services to be connected to them. :-\

I'd rather wish my clients sweet dreams over nightmares, but I can see how urban legends could indeed help some with their marketing efforts.

Let me know how that works for you though, as I find this strategy rather intriguing. :)

A few of us ran a test on urban legends a little over 1 year ago. We picked a myth and created a post on it, we created an article, we then syndicated it and bookmarked it. No promotions has been done on this post we made in over 6 months now.

As of today that urban legend post is getting 500 visitors a day. It has pulled over 10,000 visits this month so far using around 30 different keywords. The main keyword and all the related keywords is where the post is showing up in google. We did not build backlinks for all related keywords.

P.S. Merry Christmas Terra ;D

That is awesome!

But I'm still not sure of how you would connect that to your site. Would you put the urban legend post on your site, somehow connecting it to your service or product?

Or would you post articles having them point to your site or both maybe?

Merry Christmas to you too! May it be the best you've ever had!

I'm just trying to get better for the big day, but bed rest is getting boring.

I don't think I've slept as much as I have recently since I was a toddler and had to take naps, lol!

At least I have nothing more to do except cook Christmas dinner. :)

The point here is Terra that you do not have to use urban legends to achieve the same results. It could very well be some keyword phrases that are not directly related to your niche that could be used. Maybe there are some keyword phrases that are indirectly related that you could use.

Stories obviously are one thing that does get human attention and thus why urban legends are so very popular and searched for massively. You could always do a google search for the top urban legends and find stories similar to the Carmen Winstead Story or similar to your niche.

As for writing articles you would do it the same way you do any article marketing. Same concept just using different type of content basically.

Oh Gotcha! ;)

Sorry I'm a little thick when I'm sick, haha!

Whoops, didn't mean to rhyme.

Anyway, so say a story about a well known voice over actor or actress would work too?

Like when the famous voice over actor for the Aflack duck got canned for posting a derogatory joke on Facebook about the Japanese shortly after the huge Tsunami that hit Japan?

Sort of like that?

Mean ?? Oh I love Terra like the sister I never had. If I did not love her I would not pick on her :P

Terra is an urban legend in her own right ;D

You only have 17 Karma because every time that I go to give you a thumbs up you go and say something mean about Terra that should really deserve a smite and I don't want to waste the karma! :P

Awww! Thank you girlfriend! You're the best :-* , unlike some people who would kick a girl when she's down! :(

Haha Rach, I was actually considering using the smite button for the first time, when I continued reading and scrolled down to your wonderful post.

So tell you what I'm gonna do...rather than hit Ord's smite button, I'll hit your applaud button!

Ohhh, I can hear the roar of the crowd applauding you now! ;D

P.S. Marky,

Where are you when I need you?

But then again, Mark may have taken my side! ;) ;D Haha!

Why do these mythical stories such as the Carmen Winstead Story become so popular in urban society ? To some it creates fear while to others it creates intrigue. In both cases it induces a natural human instinct, curiosity.

This is why even in the age of technology that paperback romance novels still account for 80% of all books sold. These novels play upon the natural human emotions and thus continue to be popular.

Can you now think of some urban legends that could be tied to your internet marketing ?

Carmen Winstead Story was posted here only 2 weeks ago and already it holds 4 keywords and 1 main keyword. The related keywords are showing on page 2 in Google and the main which gets 33,000+ searches a month it is showing on page 4 currently.

Remember this is a 6 year old story about a girl that was pushed down a sewer and killed. This is an urban legends story that has been around and some authority sites are ranked in Google with it. This forum is only a few months old and it has still got decent listings for these keywords.

Which proves that the methods Marketers Domination (http://www.marketersdomination.com) teaches and the tools used in the members area are real and do work. Want listings increased in the search engines ? A very simple to follow step by step marketing strategy guide has been created for you in the secret marketing forum (http://marketersdomination.net/main-marketing-forums/internet-marketing-strategy-guide-and-secret-forum/).
